So we are up and running! Here are some brief things to look out for during the beta.

Installation instructions:

there are two files to download.. Maya 2008 and Maya 8.5 .. if you install them both, they will both be installed to the same directory. There is only 1 uninstall if you do this. so if you uninstall with both installed, you will still have a tools3d folder in program file/ tools3d.. so just delete that if you want it uninstalled.

a file called UV.bmp gets installed to your local C drive.. that is where Diamant UV looks for the checkerboard file.. if you want to use your own checkerboard, just overwrite this file.. just make sure the name stays the same.

If you installed Diamant UV to a different directory besides the default (that means anything but the C:\program files\tools3d drive), you must modify a file to get it too look at the correct path.. That file can be found in your
Program Files\Autodesk\Maya version\ modules\DiamantUV.txt

even if you install Diamant UV to d:\ or any other drive letter besides C:\ you must edit this file!

open this with any test editor and modify the path to the modified install directory.. everything should work fine after that.

Installing Diamant UV on a 64 bit machine:
if you are installing Diamant UV on a 64 bit machine, you will have to move a folder to the correct path. This again, is the modules folder. Since 32bit programs get installed under a different program files, you will not get the correct install. the install places the modules folder in the Program Files(x86) directory. Check that directory, Program Files(x86)\Autodesk\Maya version\ , and you will see a modules folder, just move that to the normal program files under the same location and everything should work fine!

If there are any other installation problems feel free to contact me or post in the forum.

Once everything is installed, the first time you load Maya you will have to go to the plug-in manager, you will then see, probably at the bottom, DiamantUV 1.0 and the version of Maya.. just click load, or Auto load and it should load up fine.

NOTE!!!! The beta of Diamant UV requires an internet connection! If you do not have an internet connection you will get an error upon startup. Sorry, but this is the one requirement of this beta.. If you do have an internet connection, and you still receive an error.. please let me know and we'll try to get it fixed!

A new shelf called Tools3d will be created. In that shelf is an icon called UV.. that will launch the interface.

New Users

I created pretty nice documenation for the tool that goes over everything, minus the topology tool, i will get to that later.. refer to the videos for how to use that. Please take the time to read it so you can take full advantage of Diamant UV. It has a lot of pictures to make it easier to read :) Diamant UV is only half as powerful when you dont know all the hotkeys. They really are pretty simple! Documentation is located under, start, All programs, Diamant UV 1.0 beta, then help.. uninstall is located there too.

I would also recommend creating a simple sphere.. deleting the history ( since in the documentation history is bad!!) and start playing around with the selection tools and uv tools on that.. it will make it much easier to get the hang of the tools. Once you get the hang of them, you should see how fast and easy it will be to UV and modify UVs on anything.

Please post questions, concerns, ideas, etc in the forums. If you run into a bug, please try to replicate it or at least know exactly what you did so I can try to replicate it. Thanks!

Happy UV-ing!

-Rich

On a 64 bit machine, it doesn't seem to load. Here's how I'm set up:

Maya8.5 x64

Diamant 3D program files installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Tools3d\DiamantUV

DiamantUV.txt installed to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya8.5\modules

DiamantUV.txt contents:
+ DiamantUV 1.0 C:\Program Files (x86)\Tools3d\DiamantUV

The error I get in Maya's script editor is:
Error: Unable to dynamically load : C:/Program Files (x86)/Tools3d/DiamantUV/plug-ins/Diamant_uv_8.5.mll

Is the 64 bit version of Maya unsupported?

there is no 64bit support right now.. the exe is only for 32bit maya.. the instructions are for people who are running 32bit maya on a 64bit os.. so if its 64bit maya you'll have to wait for a compile.. sorry man! hopefully soon!

I just put up a 64bit version for Maya2008 .. i need to get a copy of 8.5sp1 installed to test out the compile of 8.5 64bit.. i got a crash on the regular 8.5 which I believe is a maya bug that should have been fixed in sp1.. so hold tight if you need that version.

I updated the install instructions since i realized I had the 64bit section wrong. if you are installing the 64bit version please make sure to move the modules folder.. otherwise Maya wont recognize the directory.. if you are installing the 32bit version in windows64 then everything should install fine to begin with.

have fun!
